Your Outlook

Brandon couldn’t see over the table. He wheeled himself over to a lower table in the store and asked me to bring my computer over there. I complied but wondered how he was going to work on my computer when he has very little use of his hands and fingers.

As I talked with Brandon, I learned that he was working toward a leadership role in the company. He demonstrated strong people skills and was incredibly effective at diagnosing my computer problems. He had adapted so that his environment and physical limitations were no longer impossible obstacles but were assets that he used to pursue his goal of becoming a manager.

What was most striking about Brandon was his outlook on life. He has every reason to complain about his quality of life. Bound to a wheelchair and with significant physical limitations, he refused to let these circumstances inhibit his drive to excel. He is looking to the future, determined to live his life in spite of his circumstances. There is no doubt that his road is challenging and often difficult. But this young man made the choice not to be a victim. He refused to quit. Instead, he is leaning in to do the hard thing…. building a life for himself.

How we see our circumstances is our choice. We can give up, or we can be determined to make the most of our struggles. When we choose to overcome our obstacles like Brandon has, we will make a difference.
