The Workers

The line was long, the customers were impatient, and the staff was undermanned. I thought, “Here we go again…” as I got ready to go through the often-frustrating experience of today’s retail culture. Then, a young employee changed my dim view. She patiently checked out my purchase, and kindly asked if there was anything else that I needed. She smiled and offered a sincere, “Have a blessed day."

In the midst of all the attention given to “The Great Resignation” and the challenges of trying to find willing people to fill the empty job spaces, I think we need to recognize another group of people. Let’s show appreciation to those who are working, and trying to take care of their workplace and their customers with humanity and kindness. Here’s to those who are not only continuing to work, but who are committed to doing a good job. Here’s to a strong work ethic, character and determination. Here’s to those who are contributing to our work economy with patience and kindness.

It's easy to focus on the difficulties caused by a shortage of labor, but let’s not forget that there is still a workforce who is showing up each and every day, often under incredibly difficult working conditions. Take the time to thank those who are working, especially those working public-facing jobs, during these difficult days. Tell them you appreciate their willingness to work. The employee who came across my path was a blessing to me, and a reminder that there are good and decent people working who truly care about the people they encounter.

Choose to focus your attention on those who are serving by continuing to show up in the workforce — offer them your sincere appreciation and you will make a difference!
