The Hog and the Goat

Kate lives in Northwestern Ohio. She is a friend and Eagle Leadership Coach. We were talking recently, and she shared that each year her teenage son and daughter submit a hog and a goat to the state fair. The idea is to compete on size, muscling, volume, trimness, condition, structure and other requirements. Having zero knowledge of hog or goat competitions, I asked her how the kids came out in this year’s challenge. She said, “There is a direct correlation between the effort put into getting the hog and goat ready and the results that you get. This year the kids did not place well in the competition and it’s because of the lack of effort they gave preparing for the fair.”

Many times I think we want to take shortcuts. We have an addiction to quick fixes and instant gratification. The discipline to persevere and the determination to do the hard work are essential ingredients for relationships and life. There are no “3 keys to success” or “6 quick steps for instant growth”. Creating a healthy home, developing strong relationships, accomplishing anything significant takes discipline, determination, and hard work. There are no shortcuts.

What my wise friend, Kate, knew was that when we put a little in, we get little out. Where are you investing your time, energy and effort? Remember, there is a direct correlation between our investment and our results.

When we choose to consistently put in the hard work, we will make a difference.
