Happy Failing New Year!

Here we go again. It’s the New Year and with it comes tons of aspirational and idealistic resolutions, goals, and plans… and, if history is any indicator, most of these hopeful New Year's resolutions will be completely abandoned within a few months. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with setting goals. We all need a target to shoot towards. The problem is that we do not know how to fail. In fact, the difference between achieving our goals and not is the ability to fail well.

Failure is a part of life. Show me someone who has never failed and I will show you a fraud. The secret to success is not found in the ability to set and plan to reach our goals. It is found in the ability to get up and continue toward our goal when we fail. It is the ability to use failing as a learning tool instead of a devastating defeat. It takes courage, perseverance and strength to fall and choose to get up again.

As you set goals this year, factor in how you will handle the obstacles that you will certainly encounter. Make a commitment not to simply accomplish your goals, but to get up and try again when you fail. Decide that when you blow it, you will not give up, but instead, you will become a student. Learn why you failed, and what you can do better, and then reset your goal and move forward.

This New Year, choose to fail well. When you do, you will make a difference in the lives of those you love, live with, and lead.

Happy Failing New Year!
